Title

Modality and the Licensing of NPIs in Korean

Abstract

In this talk I will discuss the relative scope relations between Korean `any'-type NPIs and negation, and then introduce expressions of modality (which would correspond to modal auxiliary verbs in English). von Fintel and Iatridou (2003, 2006) discuss the scopal interactions of epistemic and deontic modals, negation, and NPIs in English. In English, negation scopes semantically over an NPI, which is a kind of existential. In Korean, there is considerable evidence that these scope relations are reversed -- the NPI is a kind of universal with negation in its scope (H. Lee 1996, Sells and S.-S. Kim 2006), and this leads to patterns of interactions with modal expressions which are different from English.
